Scrapbooking for the Beginner
Do you want to start your own scrapbook? You've heard all about it on TV shows, you've read the magazine, and you've got friends who already have their own creations. So what exactly is it and how do you get started?
The first thing you need to understand is that a scrapbook is not like a photo album or a diary, where you can put items arranged in chronological order. It's more like a collection of things that represent the 'non-eventual' aspects of your life, like relationships, dreams, etc.. Scrapbooking allows you to commemorate the important things in your life that otherwise wouldn't be included in an album.
Before getting started on a scrapbook, there are a few things to consider. You might want to think about what kind of scrapbook you'll create. Should you make one that records important events in your life? Or will it be focused on a specific idea or theme? You may want to consider this carefully before starting on your first page. For instance, even if you have hundreds of family photos stored over the years, you might not want to include every one of them in your book. Why not create one instead for all the places you've gone to? You don't have to use every photo in your collection to make a gorgeous and meaningful scrapbook. In fact, it's even recommended to use as little pictures as possible! Don't give yourself the pressure of trying to scrapbook every picture you've got in the box. You won't be able to deal with all of them creatively and in such a way that will recreate the memories and experiences as meaningfully as you want to, so save yourself the burden.
You don't have to spend a lot of time on your scrapbooks. Some friends have told me about their plans to start scrapbooking, but they're afraid that it would take up too much of their time. This is a lot of nonsense. You can either spend 4 hours a day scrapbooking or 1 hour every weekend; it doesn't matter at all! What matters is that you are enjoying your hobby. Scrapbooking doesn't have to be a full-time job and you don't have to make a schedule for it. Forget about the complex decorations. Don't get caught up in the decorations and the artwork that you may see in other people's scrapbooks. What really matters are the pictures and the stories contained in each page. I have heard of some people who constantly worry about the artwork in their scrapbooks. They fail to truly experience the enjoyment that this hobby is supposed to be all about.
If you need more information about scrapbook ideas or scrapbook supplies, there is a wealth of information on the Internet. There are also excellent supply stores for scrapbook materials. If you don't have too much time to spend on scrapbooking, stop fussing about it. This is a hobby, not a job. It can be a lifelong pursuit, or just a medium to capture and commemorate all the things that make up the real you.
